Earth Day!
Interesting fact: If the internet were a country, it would be the 7th largest user of energy in the world!
With this in mind, here are some tips to incorporate into your everyday life.
- Reduce the amount of data you are storing. This could also reduce your monthly storage fee.
- Delete: your deleted folder (sent up an auto-delete rule—how to use it below), delete excess photos or videos. At work, it could reduce the amount of data in the data lake!
- Change the default settings in social media apps and post lower-res images and videos.
- Reduce your doomscrolling—mindlessly scrolling for only 1 minute emits enough carbon to drive a car 13 meters! Reducing stress will help with mental health too!
- Use dark mode.
- Unsubscribe from emails you don’t want anymore rather than delete
- Send links to images rather than downloading and sending
- Don’t blur the background on your video calls, as it uses more energy.
How to Automatically Delete Old Emails in Outlook
The desktop version of Microsoft Outlook has a useful feature that makes it possible to automatically delete emails that are older than a certain number of days, weeks, or months. The feature is called AutoArchive, and here’s how you can use it:
- Launch Outlook for Windows or Mac.
- Right-click your Inbox folder or any other folder of your choice. Select Properties and switch to the AutoArchive tab.
- Click Archive this folder using these settings options.
- Choose how old you want the emails to be before automatically deleting them.
- Select the Permanently delete old items option to delete emails without moving them to a different location first. Click OK to confirm.
