Making the World a Better Place through Project Management: Event Recap
Peter and Deanna, founders of PMWB, discussed the inception of their organization. Deanna, a former board member of PMI, was inspired by individuals seeking to use project management skills in the social sector. Similarly, Peter, who teaches project management courses and has volunteered with PMI for 25 years, was approached by individuals in Brazil eager to use project management to save the Amazon rainforest. This led to the formation of PMWB in October 2014, with the aim of using project management skills to bring about societal change.
Deanna emphasized the significance of project management in improving the quality of life globally. She underscored that their professional vision is to utilize project management skills to make tangible positive impacts in the world.
Peter highlighted the significance of project management in the non-profit sector, citing studies that show improved project management maturity leads to more successful projects. He proposed the use of the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a tool to help organizations.
Peter discussed the importance of focusing on social good, with an emphasis on sustainability. He explained that sustainability goes beyond environmental considerations, encompassing fair work practices, economic profitability, and a positive cash flow. He highlighted the role of project managers in ensuring that projects are sustainable and deliver value to customers over the long term. Peter also underscored the need for sustainable work practices, such as promoting a fair work-life balance and developing team members' skills. He stressed the importance of working with partners to ensure that projects contribute to the sustainability of both partner organizations and the communities they serve.
Peter discussed the importance of sustainability and personal growth in volunteer work. He recommended volunteering in small, manageable portions, simplifying tasks instead of overcomplicating them, and aligning volunteer commitments with life's busy periods. He stressed the need for volunteers to be passionate about their projects and to avoid overcommitting to prevent burnout and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Deanna discussed the value of connecting with known organizations to support them in their project management needs. She also mentioned the potential to support organizations in identifying their project management maturity levels and addressing areas like risk management. Lastly, she mentioned the existence of volunteer matching organizations that can connect project managers with NGOs.
Peter highlighted the PMI 'Hours for Impact' program, which emphasizes project managers giving back to their communities by applying their skills to global projects.
