Project Management for Beginners

Project management is an ever growing need in today's world. While not everyone has the need or desire to become a project manager, many of the tools and skills used by project managers are being utilised in the workplace. These are just some of the resources that you can use to find out more about project management, or to assist your team who may not be familiar with what project management entails. These courses can also be used as a starting point to see if you want to pursue a certification in project managment, such as the CAPM, or eventually the PMP.

PMI has recently introduced Kickoff™ a brief 45-minute course for those who are just entering into the world of project management, or for those who may need some guidance on the basics. The course is divided into two streams, Traditional/Waterfall or Agile. Kickoff is free, and will also provide a few templates to use. PMI also has a Project Management for Beginners course that serves as a free introduction to their Project Management Basics course.

The Project Managment Basics course from PMI is an official course from PMI for those who are just entering into project management, and is a bit more in-depth. This course will also count as the 23 contact hours required to write the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) exam. The course is $400USD if you're not a PMI member, and $350USD if you are. The course is also self-paced, and includes a free digital copy of PMBOK Sixth Edition to assit with review. Note, the CAPM exam is currently undergoing some changes for early 2023, so this course may undergo some changes.

Google has recently offered a Project Management course through Coursera, the Google Project Management: Professional Certificate which is free to try for a week, and then is $39/month after. The Google certificate is not the same as a CAPM or PMP certification from PMI, but the course will count as the hours required for the CAPM certification.

Project Management is a rapidly growing field, and there are many offerings out there for people who may need to take on some project management duties within their current job, or are interested in moving into the field, but don't know where to begin. The courses offered here are only a small fraction of what is available out there, and hopefully will be of some assistance. If you're still unsure and have questions, feel free to reach out to PMINS, and we'll be happy to assist.
