Sustainable Holiday Tips
As we approach the holiday season, we should keep in mind ways that we can make it more sustainable as studies have shown household waste increases by more than 25% and food waste increases by 40%.
Here are a few tips:
- Use less wrapping paper by using fabric to wrap gifts
- Ask for presence instead of presents
- Send an ecard rather than a physical card (works especially well now due to the Canada Post strike)
- Send cards made from recycled paper
- Choose local, organic food where you can
- Reduce the amount of meat in your holiday meals
- Reduce food waste by meal planning, send leftovers home with your guests
- Avoid disposables like plastic and tinfoil (visit divertNS for sorting guides)
- Choose LED lights and a timer so lights are only on when necessary
- Buy a local tree or buy a potted tree to keep year round
- Host a holiday decoration swap
Try to buy from local businesses, Farmers Markets of NS found that if we spent 10% of our holiday budgets locally (based on an estimated budget of $904 per Atlantic Canadian), we could keep $45 000 000 in our local economy!
If I put my project management hat on, be agile in your approach. Start with a minimal viable product and pivot as necessary. Keep trying until you find something that works for you.
